Re: ____

I will add breed preservation as another reason  I breed my chosen breed the RIR lg fowl . I suppose some will say that there are RIR everywhere, but the fact is the old style dark red dual purpose reds are few and far between in western Canada .

As a homesteader my top priority is food production. I raie animals that are practical. Goats for milk, chickens for eggs and meat.

Re: ____

Started for eggs and they became pets, Roosters became meat so I know where my food comes from. Turkeys were selected after a long 2 years thinking about the ideal breed for us and sourcing stock (BSWs). They are for breed preservation and delicious turkey meat. They also have serious cuteness factor.

Mixed collection of chickens, trio of Blue Columbian Wyandottes,BSW turkeys.

Re: ____

I chose eggs and breed improvement.  I do also eat my culls but that is not my main reason for having them.  Culling is a necessessary part of keeping up on the improvement that I am after.

Re: ____

When we first started with chickens, many years ago, we wanted to provide eggs and meat to our family.  We wanted good quality and we wanted to control what they ate, so we had control of what we ate.  Things morphed from there.  We got into breed preservation and even thought about showing.  Now as we age, we are back to the eggs and meat and just pure enjoyment of having birds on the property.   I am not so anal about pure breed birds anymore.  I enjoy my mutt birds and they keep me fed and entertained.  I find them to be a joy in my life.

Re: ____

Teaching my children work ethics and where eggs and meat really comes from. How to problem solve when things happen that need to be fixed around the coop and chicken run. How to process chickens. And most of all how to respect the animals that we harvest to eat.
