Re: Home Made Battery Style Brooder. Picture Heavy.

Wow!  Looks great so far. Having all the tools and a big garage sure helps.  My garage is FULL of junk and unfinished projects and even cutting a sheet of plywood is a task.  Make sure you post pictures with chicks.

Looking for Legbar hatching eggs and rooster, and rosecomb brown leghorn hatching eggs and rooster.

Re: Home Made Battery Style Brooder. Picture Heavy.

I was think of different heating option....
What do you think of a base board heater? It would hang from the ceiling like in the first picture or I could build a cage for it.

Re: Home Made Battery Style Brooder. Picture Heavy.

Awesome job there.  I have the metal one and love it but its a bit big for the volume of ducklings I keep.  The one critique would be about cleaning the plywood?  I hosed the metal one out- if the wood one were mine I would seal it with an epoxy finish since you did such a good job building it but then again with ducklings it would be constantly wet!

Thanks
Cal

I have replaced the 1/4" hardware cloth with 1/2", it works better.
The holes are 1  3/4". Any chicks under a week old will pop thought that hole. You could put a slat over the top of the holes to prevent this. I just brood them in a box with no holes. Then I use the standard food and water feeders. Day old chicks are watching all the other chicks and learn from each other. I think it is better for them in the first week to see each other eat and drink in the open, not just popping there heads thought the holes.
=)
