"Behemoth" My Chicken Tractor With Joel Salatin's Style Dolly.

Well I had to revamp Behemoth because she was built like a poop brick house.  I removed the layer box at the one end and replaced the inner section with a door skin. I cut all the 3/4 plywood at a 5 1/2 inch arc at both ends. Which I replaced with 3/8's plywood and no climb fencing with a 1x2 door frame. The inner floor is 3/8 plywood now instead of 1/2 inch. The box joist that holds the 3/8 floor is 1x4 now. She is light as a butterfly now, yeah a 400-500 pound butterfly.

I tried 4 different wheel and axle ideas, non of them worked the way that I wanted them too. So I remembered a youtube video about this guy, Joel Salatin is his name. I love every thing this guy does!!! So I watched his video about a broiler tractors and the dolly that he used to move them. Yes that is what I will try next. I started to look for some wheels, princess auto had them on sale that week, . This is what it looks like, nice to have a long weekend to work on them. Joel only use one, I use two.

Is the dolly frame fastened to the chicken tractor frame?  Your tractor looks very sturdy.  Nice!

Thanks.=)
The dolly is not fastened to the tractor. I will be using it on all the Tractors I make, like the video.

Awesome....
:goodpost:
I have been working on a few new tractors, just finished designing a barn tractor, but it's not a tractor until it has wheels, and this idea is great.
Good find, great share and I totally like Behemoth!!

Cheers!

Re: "Behemoth" My Chicken Tractor With Joel Salatin's Style Dolly.

I love love love your chicken tractor! I've been trying to figure out how to a) include a brooder component and b) create a tractor that eliminates risk of injuring chickens as it's moved. I think we will design ours with a bigger second floor, maybe half the tractor, and a bit higher off the ground too. This way the chooks can go to sleep in the loft at night, which is when it'll be moved, but can also take advantage of all the pasture space during the day. I would love to build one that holds 100-200 and is moved by a farm truck. Now THAT would be a behemoth! Thanks for sharing!

Ooohhhhh very nice. I'm in the midst of building one for my turkeys and now I'm thinking of doing a couple of revamps. Well maybe next time.

I like the idea of a second floor though!

BTW what kind of wheels do you use? the ones I bought are sturdy but rigid and don't turn.

Re: "Behemoth" My Chicken Tractor With Joel Salatin's Style Dolly.

I would make the "Behemoth" lighter next time around!!! I have cut the brooding compartment off, it only has the 4"x 2" part and the roofed end is separate now. I'm sure that if I gave my self Hernia, you will not be able to move it with out machinery!!!
I now have build grow out pens out of rebar that are light and easy to move . My young boys move them with Dollys from Canadian Tire or Princess Auto. It's all about moving them every day!!!I work out of town and have my boys help me when I'm gone.... They have to be able to do the work!!!!I'm not there to help them....:woohoo:

Re: "Behemoth" My Chicken Tractor With Joel Salatin's Style Dolly.

I agree, lighter is easier but we have had a heck of a time with predators... Cougars, coyotes, grizzly bears, hawks - each one in different years - so I can't take any chances. One would think electric fencing would solve the problem but I'm pretty sure the griz just laughed at it on his way in to breakfast (my chooks). Our tractor will be metal construction, moved by machinery. I can't afford anymore flock decimations, emotionally or otherwise!
