Peacock Antics

One of my mumma peafowl has been trying for several days to encourage her 2 babies up on to the roof of the house. They'd get as far as the bird  feeder but wouldn't  venture that last part of the flight. These little guys are perhaps 5 or at the most 6 inches high. This morning, they made it.
I've decided I'm a real sucker for young people and birds. Many years ago, when my own kids were in that particular age group, I was for a time the leader of our multi club 4H group. We tried so hard to find older people with special talents to show the kids how to do things, so the skills wouldn't be lost.  Most would help but some absolutely refused in case the kids would invade their territory. Those same people died, taking their knowledge with them. It always seemed such a shame. There were a couple of young fellows here with their boss putting  metal siding on a building. The one spent time during the day stealing glances at the peacocks around the yard. At the end of the day, he came and asked me if he could buy a pair. He said he was never much interested in birds until he saw these guys. So in true old mother fashion, I gave him a pair. It always seems if you can create a new interest among the young people,  somewhere down the road it will help out with something. Who knows. Someday he may help to save something endangered.

bow2u     Confused that is the nicest thing I've heard for a long time.  Most people these days are all about themselves, and don't think of others.  You are a kind, generous  person. It's great to create a passion in young people.

Re: Peacock Antics

That is great!  I found my passion when I was feeding the chickens in the yard at about 10 years old when a male ring necked pheasant showed up to join the feast.  Ever since then, they have been my favourite bird, and a neighbour who raised them mentored me through raising my first two breeder flocks.
