Cornish Game Hen - 5 week old broiler

I had a broiler chick go belly up last night so I cleaned it for the dogs. First causality out of 51 chicks we received.  The diagnosis was ascites. It's body was full  of fluid. They are coming along very nice. It weighed 23.5oz almost 1.5 lbs dressed. Just the size for Cornish Game hens. You'd pay $35 for that cooked, garnished and on a plate in a restaurant. I hope the dogs are grateful. :veryfunny: the egg is for scale.

Lucky dogs! My dogs are not keen on raw whole chicken although they have no trouble eating it ground and frozen then fed thawed. Those cornish cross  are something, basically walking breasts.  As a dark meat person,  I feel ripped off when we buy commercial chickens.  Itty bitty legs and wings!

Lucky dogs!  My dogs seem to like dead chickens with feathers on.  They spend days plucking it and carrying it around then bury it in the manure pile until it is almost liquid, then roll in it and finally consume it.

Re: Cornish Game Hen - 5 week old broiler

One time, when I was still hatching for other folks, the inspectors were here.  They asked me what I did with hatchery waste, grin.  Fuzzy was in the house, and there was a dead gosling in the incubator tray......
I siad, "Fuzzy would you like this?"  She wagged happily. I said she had to eat it outside and she went to the door and I gave it to her.  Problem solved, hatchery waste disposal was happy and wagging.  Gosling was dog food.

That's a nice size for 5 weeks.

I don't give them birds with the feathers on. In fact they get holy heck if they even pick up a dead bird, even wild ones. Fur is fine but nothing with feathers.
