If you could import any breed/colour from anywhere in the world?

Do you find yourself wishing Canada had access to many of the birds available worldwide? I do.

A good idea must be workable and not send anyone to the poorhouse.

If you could import any breed/colour from anywhere in the world, what would it be? Where would it come from?

Lengthy comments and ideas welcome.

Working on an outside the box concept, more details to follow.

Nope. Happy with my Canadian chickens!! Really enjoy not having to heat my coop or worry about birds when it's -55.

There are other parts of the world with cold climates you know.

Re: If you could import any breed/colour from anywhere in the world?

I would very much like to have the European Twentse Hoen, (Kraienkoppe) in silver, and salmon duckwing, and I'd also like a flock of  the Beijing Fatty. And while I'm shopping, some Dong Tao chickens would be perfect.  :dance"
Twentse are available from Ideal Poultry, and they are in North America (some breeders in the USA) so those are the only ones that are a realistic choice. The European ones are spectacular! I can't believe nobody seems to have them in Canada. If I wasn't breeding my  Buckeye crosses,  I'd be into those. If Greenfire would still ship to Canada I would pay the $59 bucks a chick to get them. Ouch! But worth it.

I am having too good a time improving the Mottled Houdans I have to want anything else.  It is challenging and rewarding to know that I am doing my part to save a breed that isn't receiving much love.

I really want a few laughing roosters. And, a pair of fine Speckled Sussex birds. And maybe another pair of Icelandics.

Nope, not EMU'S,  just can't remember the name.   Under Rare Poultry, in a Rare Breed Book I have, the chickens are called

"KIWI'S".

Re: If you could import any breed/colour from anywhere in the world?

As far as new breeds go, there isn't any I would want to bring in. There are plenty of breeds here already and many that need help.

Existing breeds, I wish I could get Polish from Europe. There is one breeder in particular who has some of the most gorgeous Polish I have ever seen. There is also a couple of breeders in the USA that I so admire their birds.

Houdans, I would love to be able to bring in a line from a private breeder. Would love some bantam Houdans but that is only wishful thinking.

Russian Orloffs, I would love some from Europe. There are a few breeders that have the birds with the height and skull which are just lovely. It's mind blowing how big tall some breeders have managed to get their ROs.

There are a couple of breeders with very nice Speckled Sussex in Alberta. No need to go international for that one. :)

I don't believe they ship eggs, but might sell you birds at some point. Serious breeders don't sell hatching eggs. :)

Contact Kyle Lawrence or Mike & Kris Skeels, both have Speckled Sussex that do well at shows. They may even know of someone closer to you.
