Orthopedic Shoes

I was having problems with the humidity with this hatch so big surprise I had two chicks with curled toes. I developed this technique with the hatchery chicks and it works perfectly. I use thin plastic, the stuff most products are packaged in works well, it's stiff enough to stablize the foot but thin enough that it doesnt interfere with the chick walking. Cut a circle in the plastic the same size as the foot with the toes spread out. Cut the sticky end off fabric, not plastic bandaids, and cover the plastic. Turn chicky upside down in you lap and rest the foot on the shoe. The fun part is speading and straightening the toes and keeping them in the right position to put one on the sticky ends of the bandaid over the toes. Make sure you run you fingernails down the sides of each toe to ensure the bandaid is tight and sticking to the shoe. I leave them on for three to five days depending on the severity.

This is the bandaid covered plastic

Re: Orthopedic Shoes

The chick with the one curled foot should be fine in three days. the first one I will re-set her shoes in a few days as I couldnt get her toes totally straight. You can see the middle toes are still turned a bit. I use bandaids as the are easy to remove, make sure you start at the top of the foot and peel it off down towards the toes.

 thanks for sharing crooked.  Is it high or low humidity that causes this?
