Drawing Blood From A Chicken

So what an interesting way to spend a Day! Firstly it must be noted that Debbie and I are not nurses nor should we ever become one. At one point I actually heard myself say" so what do you think Debbie, is that a Vein?" Well the birds seem to be no worse for wear although we may start drinking now, Lol!

This first picture is finding that brachial vein between the bicep and tricep

Before inserting the needle pull back on the plunger  to break the seal  ... Then insert the needle into the vein toward the wingtip and wait for the telltale blooddrop to form in the needle hub, slowly draw back on the plunger to collect the blood sample.

The needle is inserted into the rubber end of the blood tube  and the sample is deposited into the tube

The tubes are labeled and dated

Then wrapped in bubblewrap and placed into a small container

I put a small icepack into a small box and placed the wrapped tubes along side

Don't forget to properly dispose of the needle tips

I filled out a submission form, enclosed it in the box and made sure the lab knows it is coming. The courier cost $25.

Re: Drawing Blood From A Chicken

It was quite an experience that I can't say I excelled at but I know I need to persevere as I may need to do this a fair bit in the near future. My understanding is that you need about 1ml  of blood although I am quite sure I did not get enough on some of the tested birds. I purchased 6 needle tips ( 25& 3/4 quage),  6 - 3ml syringes and 6 bloodtubes with the red cap. In total my vet charged around $5 for this. I shipped it by ACE courier here on the Island To the Abbotsford lab at a cost of $25. Be sure to find out when  you need to havethe courier pick it up and give yourself lots of time to do the collecting and labeling and packing/wrapping of the package  ...  or you will find yourself racing to meet the courier at some location that you have never heard of  ...  I digress, that story is for another day :(  ...  Thank you Debbie for directions and thank you to the nice policeman for not getting In my way, lol. There is a very good video that I will try to post here, I watched it many times and freeze framed it on the drawing of the blood veins.

Thank you so very much for sharing this Island Girl.  This is a great learning tool for all of us.  I hope the results come back they way you hope.  Please keep us posted.
