Greetings from Chilliwack!

Hi!

Not sure what to say as an intro. I was looking for a forum where I could find and connect with backyard poultry keepers for ideas, for help with issues, and for future breeding stock.

Our flock:
28 brown egg layers (at the end of their time...)
6 Australorp cross roosters (two mature, four coming into their own...)
22 Australorp x brown egg layer cross pullets coming into lay
4 Silkies (three older hens, one pullet - hatched by mom) - acquired for future flock incubation and brooding. Responsible for raising the last batch of 11 pullets and one of the cockerels.
1 Incubator - paid WAY too much for something that hatches 50%.
1 Incubator turned hatcher - free, and did its job well enough.

Hoping to switch over to Australorps, but who knows?

Not sure yet. For now, I'd like to increase the broody part of our small flock. The silkies are great moms, but they are small. One of the Australorp crosses looks like it may have OEG in its parentage (He comes from a friend's flock: He has a few OEG in the mix). He started off as a black chick, and then suddenly, at about 3.5 months, he came out with some really nice colours! He has a small comb - not single, not pea - somewhere in between. He has some feathering on his feet, so I thought, "Why not cross with the silkies?" He's been handled, eats out of my hand, and is generally friendly with humans. Can't say the same for the other roosters...
