The First Batch (Broody Cabinet)

Here are pics of the first batch from the broody cabinet. Gave all the chicks to the competent broody (ie. not the one suffering from wry neck).

Here's mom (second generation Silkie X Favrolles):

Here are the confirmed males (white spot on top of head from non-barred roo X barred hen):

(I think the blue is also male. Could be wrong. Lighter spot on top of head.)

Here are "the rest":

See the silver wild-type chick in the front? It could also be a male (see the white spot?):

Re: The First Batch (Broody Cabinet)

Congrats! I love the system. I wonder if it might be too hot in summer without extra ventilation????

Could well be. It is in the coolest part of the barn, and I'm going to move mom & babies outside after a week. I don't plan on using it in the hottest part of summer.

Re: The First Batch (Broody Cabinet)

Congratulations!  I crossed my black Ameraucana with a Basque hen last year and got some sex-link chicks.  They were all black.  Most of the males had obvious white spots on their heads, but one had just a bit.  The ones with the bigger spots were barred when they feathered out.  The one who had just a bit of white is mostly black with a bit of gold coloring (from the Basque) above his eyes.  He doesn't show barring in the black, as far as I can see.

Some of your chicks have a lot bigger white spot than mine did.

Starting with Blue, Black, and Splash Ameraucanas and Red Cuckoo Basque (Marraduna).
