Hatching by the moon

Supposedly the healthiest chicks are hatched on a Waxing Moon, the period between the New Moon and the Full Moon.

If you live in Western Canada your last day to set eggs for this cycle is March 10. The next round will be March 25 - April 8. That's to get a hatch during the Waxing Moon in April.

Re: Hatching by the moon

Somewhere  I read that the time of the moon at mating even affected the sex of the offspring. Do you know what that was?

Re: Hatching by the moon

This sounds interesting.  Has anyone tested this out?

Interesting, perhaps some barnyard science experiments are in the works?

Re: Hatching by the moon

 I agree...a couple of people should for it! I would try, but it is hard to do with no roosters.

Re: Hatching by the moon

I can't experiment because my hens are all past that age I'm afraid but I've ordered new chicks in the spring so maybe  next year? It's always a next year in my world.

Re: Hatching by the moon

I'll try it out. But to really compare you would need 2 or more hatches. Some on the Waxing Moon and some on the waning moon and then compare.  But I plan on setting some about then so I figure why not.

Re: Hatching by the moon

I use broodies so I’ll be at the mercy of their hormones. But I will record when they start to set and see from there!

Maybe there will be a propensity if broodies going broody during the waxing moon instead of the waning moon or vice versa.

Re: Hatching by the moon

You could do the same thing with a broody. I've "managed" broodies by swapping out their eggs until I'm ready for them to set then put the eggs I want hatched. I like using broodies.

Re: Hatching by the moon

I keep track of my hatches so I could test this theory. I looked at 2017's hatches and figured out what moon phase they were hatched under. Then I averaged the hatching success for each group comparing eggs set with chicks hatched.

I used an online moon calender and I used the following definition:
Waxing Moon = starting on the New Moon and ending on the date of the Full Moon
Waning Moon = starting on the date of the Full Moon and ending on the date of the New Moon.

2017 Incubator
Incubator batches = 19
Hatching under:
Waxing Moon = 9
Waning Moon = 10
Waxing Moon hatched an average of 9% more chicks per hatch.

Not exactly conclusive and I wasn't able to account for some general poor hatches in both groups.

2017 Broodies
I also used Broodies.
Broody batches = 19
Hatching under:
Waxing Moon = 8
Waning Moon = 11
Waxing Moon averaged 99% more chicks per hatch. That's almost twice as many.

The broodies did the best before June. In June I had 3 abandon their nests, 2 were Waning and 1 was Waxing which affected the results. Overall the Waxing Moon broody hatch rates averaged 77% vs 39% on Waning Moon.
