anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

We just ordered 35 of the cornish crosses...same type as last year.  Anybody else yet:)

Looks like we'll need a heat lamp bulb too, as the spare one burnt out last year.

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

it will be interesting to see how the rangers do for you.  Cornish cross is available from the feed stores here, but anything else is mail order.

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

I 've got 50 Cornish Cross on order for May 1. Hopefully I won't have to shovel snow out of the brooder house by then.

Blue Buff and Silver Laced Brahmas plus too much other stuff to list.

They are a dollar and forty cents here, at the feed store.  We're getting ours for June 17th.

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

Has anyone considered the slower growing, but much more hardy and less finicky, Mistral Gris.  Or the Gilmar lie of Barred Rocks where not only do you get a big hardy productive laying hen (from the BR, the MG are strictly a meat bird)  but about the time the girls start to lay the boys dress out to a plump 5 1/2 lb. fryer or roaster. Yes they take longer but you manage them like normal chickens and in the end, because they have lived the good life roaming wide and eating bugs and enjoying the sunshine, they actually taste like chicken. The broth actually jells because the bird has had time to develop collagen and bone structure. See them at  www.TrueNorthFarm.ca   Armstrong, BC.  They are a hatchery that have many more heritage breeds.

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

I really want to raise some meat birds this year but re-building the pen is on the do-list. Last year a young bear was a return customer and he shredded the wire. This year I want to make the entire pen out of old waterline pipe and hook the 40 mile fencer up to it so when Mr. Bear decides to put a paw up to climb in, kapowza! With my luck it will be me who get kapowza-ed!

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

If i could find some real Rhode Island Reds i would raise them for a meat bird , even the Barred rocks make a good bird for meat

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

I tried Mistral Gris as well as Western Rustics and Berg's Grazers. I keep going back to Cornish Cross.  They have what I'm looking for in a meat carcass and I have learned how to raise them successfully.

Re: anybody ordered their meat chicks yet?

Yes, we've gotten not too bad at the cornish crosses here too.  Feed at one end, water at the other, access to all the grass they can eat, chopped fine when they are small.....duck starter, because it's the only non medicated feed I can get here, then duck grower, and finish on hog pellets and grass.  It's a bit lower in energy, so they have less fat and grow very slightly slower, but that's not really a bad thing with only 2 old fogies to eat them.  The cost per pound of dressed meat is about the same, since we usually lose less of them on the lower energy feeds.
