Meat pigeons

I know there was a market being formed some years back for people raising them for a small meat bird , think that fell through but i'm curious if anyone has done it , always have loved them , not a lot of feed needed just  a warm secure place to nest , have eaten them as a young adult , been wondering so any info would be great

But for on Ravens wings i take flight ever higher into this my night

Re: Meat pigeons

We have a friend that has a beautiful farm.  He is a squab farmer and makes a good living at it.  He sells thousands of them monthly to the fancy restaurants in Toronto and other places in Ontario.

Re: Meat pigeons

There was a big scam several years ago involving a guy going around selling pigeon breeding stock. He claimed to have a huge market for them and would sell people breeding pairs and would agree to buy back all the birds they produced. It was a Ponzi scheme and of course he sold breeders for big money and bought back "meat birds" cheap which of course he then sold as breeding stock. After the first couple of rounds people were buying hundreds of pairs for big bucks and when it came to sell the squabs the guy had disappeared.

Re: Meat pigeons

That was the "Pigeon King" and it was a ponzi scheme. The pigeons he sold were not meat pigeons.

There are true squab producers in Ontario that produce birds for specialty markets mostly in the city.
Here is a link from France on the type of pigeon raised.

Re: Meat pigeons

The fellow we know raises King Pigeons for meat and sells them.

I think the Pigeon King picked up on that and people thought they were raising meat birds.  They appeared to be just regular barn pigeons.
